Nine runs, no lie.
You’re reading this correctly: The Mustangs scored nine runs in the first inning of game two Saturday against San Diego Christian, earning a split of the doubleheader with a 14-3 win in Lakeside.
Jaiden France and Preston White, two talented transfers, were the stars of Saturday’s finale.
France, from San Jose State, went 2-for-3 with a home run and five RBIs. White, from Birmingham-Southern College in Alabama, was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Max Maitland scored three runs, all in support of lefty starter Nate Bonsell, who was up to the task of salvaging the third game of the weekend’s series.
The Mustangs (6-4 overall, 1-2 in Golden State Athletic Conference) dropped the first two games Friday and Saturday morning, respectively, the second in heart-wrenching fashion. Bonsell proceeded to toss five innings of two-run baseball. He struck out nine and walked none.
Relievers A.J. MacCaughtry and Caleb Jaime made Bonsell’s effort stand up, each tossing an inning to close it out.
Master’s added three runs in the third and two in the fifth of the seven-inning contest. It was no mercy rule. The GSAC cuts off two innings in the second game of Saturday double-headers.
The Mustangs will continue GSAC play Friday at home against Menlo at 2 p.m., with a double-header with the Oaks to follow Saturday (first pitch 11 a.m.).
