[KHTS] – The Church On The Way Santa Clarita hosted its annual “Winter Wonderland” event Sunday evening, drawing a large crowd despite heavy rain.
“We brought in 15 tons of snow,” said Dorothy Burton, a pastor at the church. “We want to offer a service to the community: a place for the kids to celebrate.”
Several activities were set up for attendees of all ages, including sledding in real snow, age-specific snow play areas, a craft fair, a petting zoo, food trucks and a nativity scene where families could take photos.
Santa and Mrs. Claus, as well as Anna and Elsa from “Frozen” were also present, and attendees were encouraged to take photos with them.
Burton said that the event drew a smaller crowd this year due to the rain.
“I would say from this turnout we probably had 1,000 people here,” she said. “Maybe a little less (than our previous event) because of the rain.”
However, she said, the church was prepared for the weather.
“We’ve been planning for this for a while,” said Burton, “so rain or shine, we’re here.”
However, she said, the church would put on the event regardless of how many people attended.
“It’s a whole family event,” she said. “It’s an opportunity to serve the community and do something fun.”
