The suspect in an alleged gang-related stabbing last week pleaded “not guilty” Friday in San Fernando Superior Court.
Steven Markarian, 19, of Canyon Country, was arrested Wednesday in connection with a stabbing the previous evening, May 21, a Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station official said.
Markarian, a suspected gang member, confronted the victim and began an argument Tuesday night, according to Sheriff’s Station officials.
The victim was walking home with a friend near the 27300 block of Sara Street in Canyon Country, where he was confronted by the suspect, said Sgt. Dean Currie of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s COBRA team.
The stabbing occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Markarian was found near Jakes Way in Canyon Country around 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
Markarian is being booked for attempted murder,
Markarian is being held in lieu of $1.09 million bail at Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles.
The stabbing is being investigated as a gang-related incident, according to Sheriff’s Station officials.
“He was walking on his way home when the assault occurred,” Currie said. “We knew he was with one other person.”
The stabbing took place near the River Park Apartments in Canyon Country. The suspect fled the scene before responding deputies arrived at the apartment complex where the assault took place.
The victim was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where he underwent surgery to repair his wounds from the stabbing.
The victim is listed in stable condition, Currie said.
“We’re trying to determine that if its going to be gang-related,” Currie said. “I don’t think it was a robbery. It sounded like it started with a dispute.”
The station’s COBRA Team handles all juvenile and gang-related crimes.
