[KHTS] – At its annual organizational meeting Dec. 11, the Sulphur Springs School District’s governing board swore in its newly elected members and voted to appoint a new board president and clerk for 2014.

Ken Chase was newly elected to the board in November Local and Municipal Consolidated Elections. Lori MacDonald and Kerry Clegg were reelected to the board.

Clegg replaces Board Member Denis DeFigueiredo as president and Member Shelley Weinstein replaces Clegg and clerk.

Clegg has served on the board continuously since 1989, including four times as president. He has also served as a delegate to many different state, county and community school boards on behalf of the district, including the Los Angeles County Schools Trustees Association, the California School Boards Association and the Santa Clarita Valley Special Education Local Plan Area, among others.

Clegg also served as director of the state School Boards Association from 1998 to 2012.

DeFigueiredo, a Canyon Country resident since 1991, served on School Site Councils at Mitchell Community Elementary School and Sierra Vista Junior High before being elected to the Sulphur Springs board.

He has been recognized by the PTA with an Honorary Service Award and by Boy Scouts of America with a District Award of Merit.

A board member for 10 years, Weinstein has a wide range of education experience.

She is an executive board member and past president of the SCV School Trustees Association and served for five years as a director on the Executive Board of the L.A. County School Trustees Association.

Weinstein also currently works as the training coordinator for the Small Business Development Center at College of the Canyons.

The Sulphur Springs School District votes on a new president and clerk every year. Clegg and Weinstein’s terms end in December 2014.
