1863 - Gen. Edward F. Beale loans money to A.A. Hudson and Oliver P. Robbins to erect toll house in Newhall Pass [story]

Jereann Bowman High School in the Hart School District (Robin Geissler, principal) has been named a Model Continuation High School by the California Department of Education and the California Continuation Education Association.

It’s one of 24 schools across California being honored this year for “exemplary programs that provide at-risk students the environment they need to flourish,” said Tom Torlakson, state superintendent of public instruction.

“Continuation high schools serve as an alternative highway for struggling students to complete their high school education and continue on the road to higher learning or out into the workforce,” Torlakson said.

californiadepartmentofeducation_cde_logoContinuation high schools offer students aged 16 years or older an alternative high school diploma program. While most students who attend continuation high schools do so because they are behind in high school credits, others may be in need of a flexible school schedule because they have jobs outside of school, family needs, or other circumstances.

More than 67,000 students attended the state’s 479 continuation high schools in the 2012–13 school year. These alternative programs focus on school-to-career education, individualized instructional strategies, and intensive guidance and counseling.

The Model Continuation High School Recognition Program is a partnership between the California Department of Education (CDE) and the California Continuation Education Association (CCEA). The goal of the partnership is to identify and recognize outstanding programs and creates a resource list of quality programs for school visitations.

There was a total of 27 applicants. Twenty-five applicants were selected to be visited by a review team. During the site visits, the review team interviewed staff, teachers, students, stakeholders, and others familiar with the school. The recurring response from students when asked about what makes their school special was that “the teachers and staff care about the students.”

Selected schools retain their title for three years. Awardees are eligible to purchase a Model Continuation High School flag to display at their school and will also be recognized in May at the CCEA State Conference in North Hollywood.

For information on continuation education, please visit the CDE Continuation Education Web page. For more information on the CCEA, please visit the CCEA Web site at California Continuation Education Association.

I will tell you exactly how. Students, teachers, staff and administrators love it here! We are a family who treats each other with respect and the students see that–they want to learn from us, and we provide them with an educational experience they couldn’t get at any other school!

  1. I remember when it was modular buildings and no grass.

  2. I remember when it was just one small building on the corner of Nadal & Whites Cyn. It has grown a lot since then!

  3. Bulldogs baby all the way!!!!!! Once a bulldog always a bulldog, congrats bowman high school!!

  4. Lexy Rae says:

I remember when they thought about shutting us down! Thats right bulldogs, we proved them wrong. Bowman bulldogs for life! :)

  5. I’ll always be a bulldog!

  6. I’ll always be a bulldog!

No surprise, best school any student will ever attend…if they are fortunate enough to get in! I miss Bowman all the time! I still always give them credit for molding me into a better student. I will never forget the encouragement the “staff” aka: bowman family, gave to me to become the best I could be!! Thanks Bowman for making me a success story! ❤

  11. Hell yeah about time Bowman High School was the best high school i ever went to they actually care about you if you are luck enough to get in you are very fortunate once a bulldog always a bulldog!!

  12. Congratulations Bowman!
It’s so important to have schools to help students that do not get what they need from a traditional school.

  13. <3 Bowman High School on Whites Cyn…class of 82!

  14. Krissy Kjt says:

Bulldog for life!! Class of ’98! Way to go Bowman!!! This is the most positive thing that ever happened to me that I was able to attend this school!!

  15. Danielle Hardy how do you feel about this?

  16. Moretti Xel mi prepa reconocida por ser escuela modelo =D

  17. Courtney, that’s awesome. If it wasn’t for Bowman, I wouldn’t have graduated.

  18. Danielle I thought you would like that ;)

  19. Melvin Butters says:

Bowman class of 94 and proud. I produce and negotiate sales of films and the freedom to pursue what I wanted to learn is what made bowman the school for me. Its filled with out of the box thinkers while the regular high schools churn out sheep who all end up struggling at coc anyway. Goes to show school is more about obedience than learning and anyone who questions that is called a trouble maker – interesting how that works.

  20. Greg Brown says:

And people bash this school as being a “haven for losers!”

  21. I’m alumni from 71…..lol

  22. Mad love and support for the admin and students at this amazing institution in SCV. Proud parent of three graduates.
