1903 - President Teddy Roosevelt visits Gov. Henry Gage at Acton Hotel [story]
Acton Hotel

A Valencia parent is asking others to be careful after an older man reportedly tried to contact her daughter Wednesday night.

Jennifer Calderon, who lives in a Valencia Fairways townhome near the golf course, said her 10-year-old daughter was approached Wednesday by a man in a blue, four-door sedan.

Calderon’s daughter was just a few doors away from the family’s home, she said, in a fairly busy part of the residential area.

The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m., Calderon said, not far from the community pool area.

While the girl was outside playing, a man reportedly drove up, asked her to come over and motioned her with his finger to come over, the mother said.

The young girl immediately yelled “no,” and ran away, and then described the incident to her mother.

The man reportedly was white, had a “chin strap beard” that ran around his jaw line, “thick but not bushy eyebrows,” appearing to be late 30s or 40s in age, and had brown and black hair combed back.

Calderon spoke with a Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputy who said there were similar sightings called into the Sheriff’s Station, but no one had officially reported the activity.

The activity described could be a violation of California Penal Code 647.6, which states:

(a)(1) Every person who annoys or molests any child under 18 years of age shall be punished by a fine not exceeding five thousand dollars ($5,000), by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year, or by both the fine and imprisonment.

(2) Every person who, motivated by an unnatural or abnormal sexual interest in children, engages in conduct with an adult whom he or she believes to be a child under 18 years of age, which conduct, if directed toward a child under 18 years of age, would be a violation of this section.

The area’s homeowners association is aware of the incident, and Calderon wanted to make sure any other parents were aware, she said.

Anyone with information about the incident should call the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies at 661-255-1121.
