A College of the Canyons student was arrested Tuesday after students reported to Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials that he reportedly planned to “bring a gun to school and hurt someone.”
Noe Martinez, 19, of Palmdale, was arrested at 3:45 p.m., according to Lt. Hahnlein of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and the following is a statement issued by the college.
“The suspect had told two other students he planned to shoot specific students and then kill himself. The two students reported the threats to an instructor, who then called Campus Safety. Officers from Campus Safety coordinated with deputies from the SCV Sheriff’s Station, who went to the suspect’s class and escorted him from the room. After taking him into custody, the deputies searched his backpack and vehicle, but did not find any guns.
Deputies confirmed the investigation resulted in Martinez being charged for making a criminal threat; however, no gun was found on campus.
No student was injured in the incident.
The suspect remains in custody in lieu of $50,000 bail, with a court appearance scheduled for Thursday, per Sheriff’s Department records.
This situation serves as a reminder of the role we all play in helping keep our college safe. If you see, or hear, something suspicious or alarming, you need to say something. You can contact Campus Safety by calling ext. 3229 at the Valencia Campus, or by dialing ext. 3977 at Canyon Country.
