A Valencia man has been identified as the firefighter killed in a crash while he was on the way to help fight the Canyon Fire.

At approximately 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 21, 2016, Fire Engineer Ryan Osler died in a line of duty in a vehicle accident on the Canyon Fire in Santa Barbara County, Calif.

A second firefighter was involved in the accident and transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. The crew was providing support as part of the fire fighting force operating on the Canyon Fire.

The accident is under investigation by California Highway Patrol. No details are available at this time.

Families have been notified and department liaisons are assisting all family, friends, firefighters and co-workers affected by this tragedy. Osler is survived by his wife and two children.

Osler was 38 years old and had been with the Ventura County Fire Department for the last 18 years. He began his career in 1998 as a member of the Ventura County Fire Handcrew and was hired as a Trainee Firefighter in 2006. After six years of service, he promoted to the rank of Fire Engineer at Fire Station 42 in Moorpark.

“Our collective hearts are broken at the loss of our friend and brother Ryan. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family,” said Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen. “We are deeply moved by the outpouring of public support for Ryan and on behalf of all the men and women of the Ventura County Fire Department, we thank you for your continued prayers.”

All flags are ordered to half-staff immediately and mourning bands will be worn until further notice. Funeral arrangements are pending and information will be made available as soon as details are finalized.

Today, Assemblyman Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, released the following statement regarding the death of Ventura County Firefighter Ryan Osler:

“I am saddened at the loss of one of our local firefighters. My prayers are with Ryan, his wife and their two children. Our state’s brave men and women risk their lives each and every day to keep us safe from fires, yet it is always awful to hear of incidents in the field. I send my deepest condolences to Ryan’s family and friends.”

Sacramento, California – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today issued the following statement regarding the death of Ventura County Fire Department Fire Engineer Ryan Osler:

“Anne and I were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Fire Engineer Ryan Osler, a man who dedicated his life to protecting his fellow Californians. This tragedy reminds us of the dangers firefighters face every day. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and many colleagues who are mourning this loss.”

Osler, 38, of Santa Clarita, died today in a vehicle accident near Lompoc in Santa Barbara County while responding to the Canyon Fire.

Osler was an 18-year veteran of the Ventura County Fire Department. He is survived by his wife and two children.

In honor of Osler, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.
