[USDA Forest Service] – The draft Environmental Assessment for the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument Plan is now available for review. This draft EA is an amendment to the existing Angeles National Forest Land Management Plan, analyzing two alternatives in detail including a “no action” alternative.
The 60-day comment period began Aug. 19, 2016, when the document was published (as specified in 36 CFR 219. 16) and will run through Oct. 17, 2016. This extended comment period is over and above the requi red 30 days to make sure those who are’ interested in this action will have adequate ti me to participate in public meetings, share their concerns and make comments before a final decision is made.
The project area is commonly known as the ‘San Gabriel Mountai ns National Monument’ which covers 346, 177 acres and is located i n the northern and southeastern portions of the San Gabriel Mountain Range, approximatel y 30 miles northeast of Los Angeles. The Forest Service proposes to change some existing management direction i n the existing Forest Land Management Plan to be consistent with the Presidential Proclamation which established the Monument. Once we decide to amend the Forest Plan as proposed or make adjustments based on public comment, the final decision will be issued.

Can someone please explain to me how our governmental “shepherds” can perform actions that US Citizens haven’t yet approved based on these documents?
Congress’ logjam has already stiffed the National Forests for funding over the last 20 years. There are no new fundings for the National Forest Service. NFS staff has done their best to ensure access to America’s Wilderness given their shrinking budget over the past 20 years.
I’d love to take the current document’s and vet them to ensure that the sales pitch matches the investment. Unfortunately that is not possible. Us “citizens” are not privy to the slicing and dicing that occurs when it comes time to actually spend money on the NF.
Or, you could hire me at $100.00 per hour and I would gladly take a hoe and a rake, (and eventually a fine-toothed comb) to the numbers that our esteemed representatives have stated will renew, replace and re-grow our sainted bequest: The Los Angeles National Forest.
Thanks y’all, but try not to overload my inbox. We all know the truth here. Other than the few hundred hikers and bikers who gain by this plan, we are not paving paradise, we are GATING paradise. We aren’t putting up parking lots, we are preventing access from anyone who isn’t capable of hiking 10 to 15 miles. Unless you are willing to drive (or have your local group’s approved bus) take you to trail-heads; and then that will lead your right back to the parking lot.
