Santa Clarita’s Domestic Violence Center received a share of the 1.2 million books donated by Barnes & Noble customers over the holidays, the company announced Friday.
The nation’s largest bookseller collected the books for children in need across the country during its 2011 Holiday Book Drive. Books were donated by customers who purchased books from Barnes & Noble between Nov. 1 and Jan. 1 for that purpose.
“Barnes & Noble customers are generous every year, and this holiday season certainly was no exception,” company spokeswoman Sarah DiFrancesco said in a statement. “This holiday tradition is a wonderful way for booksellers and customers to come together and give the gift of reading to children in their local communities.”
The Domestic Violence Center was one of agencies the retailer identified as a recipient. Others are the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital in New York, Motts Children’s Hospital in Michigan, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Utah Foster Care Foundation, the Minnesota Literary Council, Children’s Service Society of Wisconsin, Head Start of Western Pennsylvania, Durham’s Partnership for Children, the United Way of Baton Rouge and Charlotte Emergency Housing, among others.
