In a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee, The Master’s College women’s basketball team routed the Caltech Beavers 109-49 at Bross Court.
The victory brings the 10th-ranked Lady Mustangs’ 2013 record to 3-1.
Stampeding to an early 9-0 start, 2 minutes and 25 seconds into play, the Lady Mustangs controlled things from the get-go and never once let the Beavers come close to gaining the lead. Incidentally, TMC’s largest lead of the first half came off a Jacquelyn Marshall (San Clemente, CA) free throw at the 00:00 mark, putting the Lady Mustangs up 58-22 by halftime.
At the break, TMC had scored 42 points in the paint, yanked down 39 rebounds, forced 23 offensive turnovers, and produced a sparkling 66.7% (24-36) shooting percentage.
The Lady Mustangs’ torrential downpour of scoring continued in the second half when TMC’s bench tallied an astonishing 51 points. As a result, all 13 athletes on The Lady Mustangs’ roster received valuable playing time in the 109-49 shellacking.
Overall, the Lady Mustangs finished the evening with a 63.8% (44-69) shooting percentage, scored 64 points in the paint, caused 42 offensive turnovers, and grabbed 39 rebounds. Notably, TMC’s bench scored 70 points.
Olivia Thompson (Huntington Beach, CA) led the Lady Mustangs in scoring with 12 points, while Bianca Cubello (Riverside, CA) and Marshall each tacked on 11 more. Cubello’s 11 points coupled 12 rebounds, resulting in her first double-double of the season. Zoe Scott (Spokane, WA), who finished the evening with 10 points, led the squad with 5 assists while Millie Rivera (Allen, TX) produced a team-high 4 steals. Nichole Nitake (Torrence, CA) went 2-3 beyond the arch, contributing to her 8 points.
Commenting on his squad’s performance, head coach Dan Waldeck stated, “Today was a good opportunity to get back out there and work on improvement in little areas. I’m proud of the bench being able to get in and play extended minutes while still accomplishing team goals.”
Now, the squad will prepare for next weekend’s Santa Barbara-based CHM Hotels Invitational, when they will have their work cut out for them in games against No. 6 Freed-Hardmen (Tenn.) and No. 18 Carroll College (MT).
The Lady Mustangs will face Freed-Hardmen on Friday in a 5:30 p.m. tipoff, and square off against Carroll on Saturday, also at 5:30 p.m.
Game Notes:
TMC’s 109 points scored against the Beavers is an impressive accomplishment, but it was in the 1998-99 season when The Master’s College women’s basketball team produced a program-high 122 points against the Pacific Union Pioneers.
