[KHTS] – Santa Clarita Shakespeare Festival officials are holding auditions May 17 for this year’s production, SCSF officials announced Monday.
The 2014 Los Angeles SummerFest, previously known as Shakespeare in the Park, will feature one of Shakespeare’s lesser-known plays, “Cymbeline,” and all roles are currently open, event officials said.
“We are looking for people who have got some experience with theater productions, as opposed to movies or television, and who have an understanding or love of Shakespeare,” said David Stears, SCSF’s founder and producing artistic director. “And if they have past experience in an outdoor theater, that would be great.”
Auditions are by appointment only, and actors are asked to submit a picture and resume to casting@scshakespearefest.org to receive a confirmation with their audition time and location.
Actors must prepare a two-minute Shakespearean monologue for their audition. SCSF officials are planning some double-casting and possible cross-casting, according to a SCSF news release.
As one of Shakespeare’s last plays, “Cymbeline” is rarely produced because it has a lot of different elements to it and is not easily classified as a tragedy or comedy, event officials said.
“We’re celebrating his 450th birthday this year, so I think it’s exciting to do something people don’t get the chance to see on a regular basis,” Stears said. “Also, there’s elements to the play that kind of make it like his greatest hits. He has scenes and theatrical conventions from a lot of his earlier plays, so he’s using a lot of different things that he’s experimented with before.”
This year’s production is directed by Erin McBride Africa and assistant director Luck Hari, according to the news release.
This is the fifth season of SCSF at the Rivendale site in Towsley Canyon, and the second year as part of the renamed LA SummerFest, which features an expanded festival with concerts, musicals and special events throughout the summer.
