[KHTS] – Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved three agenda items Tuesday that should bring some changes to the Santa Clarita Valley.

The Castaic Sports Complex Phase II Olympic Size Pool Project was approved Tuesday and officials with the Department of Public Works are to begin designing the news plans.

The total project budget is set at $7,625,000, according to the Supervisor’s agenda.

Phase I of the project was completed in May 2013. The project consisted of a new aquatics center with a 12,500-square-foot pool building, 6,245-square-foot competition pool, 4,435-square-foot recreation and children’s pool and improvements to already existing  parking, walkways, fencing, landscaping and underground utilities, according to the agenda.

Phase II of the project includes a 50-meter Olympic competition swimming pool, pool deck expansion, shade structures, expanding the men’s and women’s restroom and shower areas, provide a classroom, concession area, exercise room and the construction of a 150 space overflow parking lot.

The estimated construction date is set to begin in December and the expected completion is planned for August 2016, said Tony Bell, spokesman for County Supervisor Michael Antonovich.

Building Rehabilitation In Canyon Country and Castaic

Three properties in the Santa Clarita Valley were ordered to be cleaned up after being deemed a public nuisance.

The Building Rehabilitation Appeals Board officials, under Title 26 of the Los Angeles County Building Code, provides for the arrest and abatement of neighborhood deterioration and the elimination of unsightly, unsafe and unhealthful conditions, according to the agenda item.

The three addresses include:

30703 San Martinez Road, Castaic, California 91384

30874 San Martinez Road, Castaic, California 91384

23104 Shawnee Court, Canyon Country, California 91390

Board officials declared the properties a public nuisance and ordered the properties be cleared of all trash, junk, debris; miscellaneous personal property; discarded household furniture and appliances; wrecked, dismantled, or inoperable vehicles; and all overgrown vegetation by Friday, Feb. 20, according to the agenda item. The properties must be maintained in the future.

Repairs to the buildings can extend to March 23.

Defects found include causing nearby property values to decrease; the buildings were open and accessible to children, vandalized, and a threat to public safety and welfare until it was barricaded; the doors and windows are broken; the electrical system is nonconforming, missing, or potentially hazardous; overgrown weeds created a negative appearance; and trash, junk and debris were scattered about the premises, among other issues, according to the findings.

Mint Canyon and Whites Channel Invert Access Ramps Project

County Supervisors approved the construction of two access ramps within channels maintained by the county in the Santa Clarita Valley.

“The first ramp will be located in Mint Canyon Channel just north of Soledad Canyon Road, and the second ramp will be located in Whites Channel west of Camp Plenty Road,”said Steve Burger, principal engineer of the Construction Division of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, in an email to KHTS AM 1220. “ The construction of the ramps will provide improved access to the channels for routine maintenance by crews from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works.”

The estimated cost of the project is between $275,000 and $375,000, he added. The project is expected to begin this summer.

The proposed project will construct a 15-foot concrete invert access ramp upstream of the Private Drain 1894, and will reconstruct the existing outlet structure to improve channel maintenance activities, according to a Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board document. The proposed project is necessary in order to upgrade the access ramp and allow for heavy equipment to access the channel.

The Mint Canyon/Whites Channel project was approved by the Board of Supervisors today, February 17.  The project consists of the construction of access ramps within County maintained channels at two locations within Santa Clarita.  The first ramp will be located in Mint Canyon Channel just North of Soledad Canyon Road, and the second ramp will be located in Whites Channel West of Camp Plenty Road.  The construction of the ramps will provide improved access to the channels for routine maintenance by crews from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works.

The project cost is estimated to be between $275,000 and $375,000 and is expected to be constructed this summer.

21 Recommendation: Acting as the Governing Body of the County Flood Control District, approve the project and adopt the plans and specifications for the Mint Canyon and Whites Channel Private Drain 453, Invert Access Ramps Project (Project) in the City of Santa Clarita (5), at an estimated construction contract cost between $275,000 and $375,000; advertise and set for bids to be received before 11:00 a.m. on March 19, 2015; find that the proposed Project is exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act; and authorize the Chief Engineer to take the following related actions: (Department of Public Works) ADOPT Determine the bid of the apparent responsible contractor with the lowest responsive bid; Award and execute a construction contract with the responsible contractor with the lowest responsive bid within the estimated cost range and deliver the Project; and Approve and execute change orders within the same monetary limits delegated to the Director of Public Works, allow substitution of subcontractors and relief of bidders, accept the Project upon final completion, release retention money and extend the date and time for the receipt of bids consistent with the requirements.
