The multinational Cemex corporation has let the City of Santa Clarita know it is starting work to update its required mining permits and plans to begin surface mining of aggregate in Soledad Canyon, on city-owned land.
Thanks to two 10-year leases issued by the Federal Bureau of Land Management, Cemex has mining rights to the minerals below the City’s 493-acres in Soledad Canyon, located on the east side of Santa Clarita.
Over the last 16 years, Santa Clarita officials have worked diligently to stop this large scale gravel mining project in Soledad Canyon. The Santa Clarita City Council is unanimous in its decision not to give up the fight to prevent the mining project and will LEAVE NO ROCK UNTURNED in its continued efforts to prevent it from moving forward.
“At this time, we are asking that residents stay engaged with this issue by signing up on our “Stop the Mine” eNotify (santa-clarita.com/stopthemine) to receive email updates on the issue, including information about any upcoming meetings, community letter-writing needs, updates on legislation and outreach efforts,” said Mayor Marsha McLean.
According to various studies conducted over the years on the impacts of this project, Santa Clarita can expect significant negative effects on the entire region. At capacity, the project will have excavation activities going on 17 hours per day, six days per week. Processing is scheduled to take place 16 hours a day and shipping activities are expected to take place 24 hours a day.

Incredibly, after spending millions of taxpayer dollars, so many of the local citizens don’t even have a clue as to where this is or what is going on. Unfortunately, most of them that “think” they are in the know, are clueless as to potential REAL impacts. Forget the panic driven hyperbole, and look into some facts. Unless that happens, the result will NOT be desireable. (Unless you are the Mexicans that own CEMEX)

I hope the entire Santa Clarita Valley engages in protesting this threat to our community. From those on the west side fighting to prevent brine injection wells, to those on the east side who know their air and environment will be polluted, we must join hands fighting against these hazards.
Leadership should not just come from the City, but also the surrounding communities. This is truly a time to step forward and raise our combined voices to halt this forced intrusion against our quality of life.

Most of the blame falls on Buck McKeon who was our congressman for all the time the CEMEX controversy was brewing. If the mine starts up, I think it should be known forever as “BUCK’S FOLLY.”
It is no surprise that when Buck retired this year, he abandoned the SCV and moved to the D.C. area permanently. He could never show his face safely in this town after this debacle! What a piece of work…
