Deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station wrote 48 citations during Tuesday’s bicycle and pedestrian safety operation in Newhall.
The 48 citations were for:
1 = unsafe speed
2 = red light violations
1 = excessively loud music
13 = driver failing to yield to a pedestrian
31 = cell phone violations
SCV Sheriff’s Station officials mapped out locations over the past three years where pedestrian and bike collisions have occurred along with the violations that led to those crashes. Extra officers were patrolling areas where bike and pedestrian traffic and crashes occur in an effort to lower deaths and injuries.
Officers looked for violations made by drivers, bike riders and pedestrians alike that can lead to life-changing injuries.
Special attention was directed toward drivers speeding, making illegal turns, failing to stop for signs and signals, failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks or any other dangerous violation.
Additionally, deputies were on the lookout for violations when pedestrians cross the street illegally or fail to yield to drivers who have the right of way.
Bike riders were stopped and citations issued when they failed to follow the same traffic laws that apply to motorists. All riders were reminded to always wear a helmet – those under 18 years of age must wear helmets by law. Pedestrians should cross the street only in marked crosswalks or at corners.
Bicycle and pedestrian fatalities are rising in California as more people use these non-motorized means of transportation.
In the contract cities policed by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Santa Clarita among them, deputies have investigated 3,512 fatal and injury collisions involving pedestrians and bicyclists during the past three years. In 2013, California witnessed 701 pedestrians and 141 bicyclists killed, accounting for more than 28 percent of all traffic fatalities.
Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

I don’t get it, I had my MAGA hat on and I voted for trump, how could I get a ticket?
Let me break this down for you if you dont pay the exstortion fees to the dmv for protection they send there armed goon sqaud to collect the kings taxes.Its no differnt then the mafia or the tongs.You dont pay them they take everything you got.Dmv doesnt pay for the roads you do when you buy gas.The roads are worse then living in a third world nation.people are so brain washed they have no idea they sign there car over when they register it you no longer own it.And the crazy thing you sign up for this if you didnt they would have to leave tou alone!! Fact check this and enter the rabbit hole lol
Who cares
Maybe you will when you or a loved one becomes a victim? ?
A victim of what….a ticket?
Cathy ?? I’ll spell it out for them:
VICTIM HERE IS WHEN ONE OF YOUR LOVED ONES DIE BECAUSE OF AN ASSHOLE WITH A CELL PHONE IN THEIR HAND WHILE DRIVING. ??
The more you know. ?
They could write that many for speeding on Foxlane Dr in a couple hours !!
Then they used the money to print more tickets and everyone will still drive like douchebags. The end.
Then what’s YOUR solution? ?
My solution was moving to Acton.
Nobody speeds in Acton. ?
The City must really need funds to ticket people for these silly violations! Glad I don’t live in this community anymore,
one tickets people for even excessive music! As a musician, I’m sure to have been pulled over! Good grief, SCV Sherrif’s Department.
So you’re saying running a red light is fine? That speeding is ok to do? Above the law much?
“Silly violations?” Did you read the cites? I’m glad you don’t live in this community anymore either! One less idiot on our roads!
Sarah Tattersal…don’t come back!
Your not welcome back either.
Im happy about it… Bikers bug me they want to pretend they are cars but don’t follow the laws. So I’m glad they are getting tickets for what cars do. If u want to share the road then u need to share the rules
They weren’t giving tickets to bikes. The article just mentions bikes.
Oh… I reread it… Well they should give tickets to bikers who want to be cars lol
They were looking for bike violations and in the meantime found dozens of asshole drivers on their phones instead. Write em up!!
From the article…
Officers looked for violations made by drivers, bike riders and pedestrians alike that can lead to life-changing injuries.
Ummmm read the article please. I wasn’t aware bikers wanted to be cars.
31 cell phone violations. That’s disturbing. Put the phone away and drive!!
They must need the revenue? What’s next parking meters like in L.A.?
No, we need the traffic crashes to stop due to excessive speed, distracted driving, wrecked driving, failure to yield to pedestrians, etc. Shall I continue?
“safety operation” ????
Just be honest and say it’s all about scraping as much cash out of the local community as possible
Guess you don’t understand the City. All they care about is that property tax bill you get twice a year. SCV Sheriff’s Dept gets ZERO of any “revenue” from their actions, except maybe one less fatal traffic report to write.
Cause of all the traffic fatalities in SCV ?
I agree with Ms.Baker. She is a good voice for my city. Thank You, Ms. Baker
Wheres the protect and serve part? Oh ya, protect the govt bottom line and serve a citation
Wrong Department, Ace
Ya. City cops dont have to…
Rights stop somewhere… Could you tell me what good is done by criminalizing locals?
Love the “i believe tyranny is good because i am a statist” never disagree with the establishment. You dont support them if you dont support their harassment.
I almost get hit about once a week while crossing in a crosswalk from asshole drivers. Write em up, hit em in the wallet… they suck.
Did I read that correctly – 31 of the 48 were idiots on cell phones while driving? That is a scary statistic.
My thoughts exactly! Driving up to SCV for work in one day and back, I had 6 people up there swerving into me because they were on the damn phone. Bet your ass I rolled my window down and said something. This is how people get killed! My commute in the area is a total of an hour. 6 in one hour!!
Good!
Wish the cops would have given the jerk that crossed the double yellow lines on the 14 a ticket. They did it right in front of them!
Silly cites? Tell that to the family who
Lost their son at the intersection of Seco and Bouquet from a driver on his cell phone who also ran a reed light.
They should start doing this on Bouquet Cyn between Newhall Ranch Road and Seco!!!
Priscilla Marie drive caredully
simply revenue
Yes I totally agree with you I see the difference too
