1903 - President Teddy Roosevelt visits Gov. Henry Gage at Acton Hotel [story]
Acton Hotel

The minimum wage in the city of Santa Clarita for all industries is $11 an hour for businesses with 26 or more employees and $10.50 an hour for businesses with 25 or fewer employees, effective January 1.

The city of Santa Clarita follows the state of California minimum wage requirements.

Businesses in the unincorporated Los Angeles County may be subject to a different rate.

Here are a few frequently asked questions and answers:

Q). May an employee agree to work for less than the minimum wage?

A): No. The minimum wage is an obligation of the employer and cannot be waived by any agreement, including collective bargaining agreements. Any remedial legislation written for the protection of employees may not be violated by agreement between the employer and employee. Civil Code Sections 1668 and 3513

Q). Is the minimum wage the same for both adult and minor employees?

A): Yes. There is no distinction made between adults and minors when it comes to payment of the minimum wage.

Q). I work in a restaurant as a waitperson. Can my employer use my tips as a credit toward its obligation to pay me the minimum wage?

A): No. An employer may not use an employee’s tips as a credit toward its obligation to pay the minimum wage.

Q). What can I do if my employer doesn’t pay me at least the minimum wage?

A): You can either file a wage claim with the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (the Labor Commissioner’s Office), or file a lawsuit in court against your employer to recover the lost wages. Additionally, if you no longer work for this employer, you can make a claim for the waiting time penalty pursuant to Labor Code Section 203.

  1. But is only for companies what they have over 25 employees.

  2. dennis says:

Who can live on that kind of money thats ridiculous.Rent is thoudands of dollars 400 a week after taxes

    • Travis Levy says:

Dennis , The fact that people think they can live on that is what’s really concerning . I’m 37 years old and have lived in SCV since 1980.Not once have I had a minimum wage job. Not even in high school. I had to have my parents sign a work permit at 15 years old. I have always felt I’m above the minimum.

  3. And it shows at Taco Bell, boy what an experience ?

  4. Tina says:

    Trump wants to bankrupt America!

  5. Trudy Trump says:

Looks like another price increase for menu items at restaurants again

  6. AJ Yarbrough says:

    Eric Ibrahim Sandra Ibrahim

  7. Michael Born says:

Cool, keep telling businesses what to pay their employees, that’s exactly how free markets work

  8. make it 15-20$. You can’t rent a 1 bedroom apartment anywhere in the SCV for 10.50 an hour.

  9. Jared Axen says:

Aaaand everything else goes up now.

  10. Jase Yo says:

Great, now the cost of living increases to adjust.

The only winner is the government which will pull more income taxes while EVERYONE pays more.

  11. I know that Santa Clarita is very expensive place to live. So where do the workers of this town live? Do they commute from San Fernando? Fillmore?

    • Sophie Sidky says:

San Fernando. Palmdale/Lancaster. Basically places where there aren’t really any job opportunities.

      • Travis Levy says:

Sophie, Northrop Grumman in Palmdale is hiring 2000 more people. So don’t tell me there are no good jobs in Palmdale. Here’s the real question. How many people reading this article or commenting on it are actually ready for a big boy/girl job? Are you ready to start work at 5am,work ten hours, work overtime and give up weekends if needed. The answer to that is NO. Everyone wants to make more but aren’t willing to work hard. “The Millennial” generation is all about gemme gemme gemme. You only get out what you put into something. I currently do not have a degree and make 70K.There are good jobs out there but they come with some sacrifice. Working early or late hours and giving up weekends or driving an hour to work.

        • jon derp says:

good for you! everyone come be a slave like this guy give up your entire short life on this planet to make a lost 70k ! where was your job at exactly? im asking for a friend

  12. Come on, the real wage would be better at $22.50-$23.00.

  13. Here comes more automation in fast food restaurants.

  14. And all the stores now have more and more self Check out lanes.
    Good stuff.

    • Greg Davis says:

Final score will be out of business in a year or two according to the owner, Joe. Liberals say he has to raise his prices. He says, everything else goes up as well? That store has been around for almost 40 years and donated to local schools and sports organizations. Who’s worse off when we lose final score?

  15. Death. Destruction.
Burger flipping robots, $15 Big Macs, locusts with the face of man, spiraling inflation,….
Remember when Bill Clinton raised minimum wage twice and the ENTIRE ECONOMY COLLAPSED ????
    Yeah, neither do I.
In fact, in 2014 the states that raised minimum wage saw the fastest job growth in the COUNTRY…

  16. Sorry kids, It’s not your employers responsibility to get involved in your rental agreements or pay your bills.
    Tough being an adult….not.

  17. Shay Kay says:

Jeanette, the whole point of minimum wage was for people to live off it…

  18. Jeanne says:

You may not be able to afford Santa Clarita to live in. I can’t afford Beverly Hills either. Remember when we were in our 20’s we would have to share rent with someone. Roommate!

  19. Every where in California is expensive

  20. Mandy Day says:

Idiotic policy, 15 an hour makes it harder for people to get a job and will result in more automation. Businesses will raise prices as costs go up and the few lucky enough to be making 15 an hour will find their purchasing power diminished. Trained professionals who actually earned 15 will also demand raises… economics 101 but the loony liberals insist on learning everything the hard way.

  21. I know liberal heads are exploding but lowering taxes and regulations on job creators actually creates good paying jobs and that will play out. Dems just want to force businesses to pay more regardless of the consequences because its easy and popular among the common people who don’t know anything about economics

  22. Dean Botton says:

$15/hr = more expensive fast food & more expensive everything. How about, grow a pair of testicles & work your ass off to actually achieve something. Live in your car if that’s what it takes. Stop being millennial cry babies. I’m a millennial & I’m absolutely disgusted at my generation. Go enlist & stop crying like you need a diaper change. You absolute worthless babies. Grow a pair
