Three sisters from Canyon Country were rescued from Pyramid Lake Friday afternoon and treated for hypothermia.

Or were they?

According to a statement from the Parks Bureau of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, at 12:30 p.m., deputies observed three females, ages 21, 19 and 11, attempting to tread water and stay afloat in the main boating channel, 40 yards from shore.

The statement said the trio was pulled from the water onto the sheriff’s boat and treated for hypothermia.

“All three were starting to feel the effects of hypothermia and exhaustion because the water temperature was 53 degrees,” the statement said. “The deputies advised them that they were in a no-swimming area and the temperature of the water was at a dangerously cold temperature for them to be swimming.”

“The deputies administered first aid and treated the swimmers for hypothermia. They refused further medical treatment,” the statement said.

One of the sisters, Karly Scripture, 17, of Canyon Country, said it ain’t so.

Scripture told SCVNews.com that she and her sisters had been swimming for two hours and had just swum across the lake. They were sitting on a dock and were not in the water when the sheriff’s rescue boat showed up, she said.

“We were all perfectly fine,” she said, adding that there were four sisters, not three. The swimmers were actually 19, 17 and 11, she said, while a fourth sister, age 13, was tanning herself.

Scripture said the group hadn’t called for help – and she said no aid was rendered.

“We were not treated for hypothermia,” she said.

Scripture said she and her sisters were about to swim back across the lake when the rescuers arrived. She estimated it would have taken them 20 to 30 minutes to do so. They had swum across other lakes before, though not Pyramid, she said.

There is one area where the teenager agrees with the deputies’ assessment of the situation: The girls didn’t know swimming wasn’t allowed at Pyramid until the deputies told them so.

“They said they thought it was OK to swim in the lake,” the sheriff’s statement said.

It wasn’t.
