Trevor Bauer is in just his second season of professional baseball. But already he is on the verge of getting called up to “the show.”
Just one year ago, the Hart High product was finishing his collegiate career with the UCLA Bruins. He won the Golden Spikes Award, the Heisman Trophy of NCAA Division 1 baseball, and was named Collegiate Baseball’s National Player of the Year. He went 13-2 for the Bruins with a 1.25 ERA and an NCAA-best 203 strikeouts in 16 starts.
In June, 2011, Bauer was taken with the third overall pick in the First-Year Player Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was assigned to Visalia in the high Single-A California League and pitched just 9.0 innings before getting promoted to the Double-A Mobile Bay Bears to finish the season. He led the Bay Bears to the Southern League championship.
This year Bauer started in Mobile, and in eight starts compiled a 7-1 record with a 1.68 ERA.
So not surprisingly Bauer was promoted to Triple-A Reno in May and he has not been stopped. In six starts with the Aces, Bauer is 4-0 with a 2.68 ERA. He has struck out 44 batters in 37.0 innings.
He has the mentality and the preparation of a starter, and when looking at the five starters currently on the Arizona Diamondbacks roster, the comparisons becomes favorable to a big league call-up.
