The College of the Canyons theatre department will present its production of “In The Heights” on the main stage of the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center (PAC) for a two-weekend run beginning Friday.

“In the Heights” is a buoyant musical infused with the rhythms, sounds, and energy of Latino music. It celebrates the hopes, passion, and tenderness of a tightly knit community in New York. The Tony Award-winning musical includes the story of a Latina first-generation college student struggling to succeed in school, the sacrifices of her parents, and the joy the community finds in overcoming adversity together.

Music and lyrics for “In the Heights” were composed and written by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Pulitzer Prize for “Hamilton” in 2016), with book by Quiara Alegría Hudes (Pulitzer Prize, “Water by the Spoonful” in 2012).

The COC production is brought to the stage by the team behind last year’s popular production of “Legally Blond,” directed by Matt McCray with musical direction by Dr. Terry O’ Donnell, and choreographed by Anthony Powell.

“This uplifting and exuberant show is shaping up to be the finest musical the theatre and music departments have ever co-produced,” said Dr. Carmen Dominguez, Dean of the COC School of Visual and Performing Arts. “Our diverse group of students is tremendous.”

The cast is comprised solely of College of the Canyons theatre students. Students in the theatre classes will also facilitate scenery and lighting for the production.

“In The Heights” won the Tony Award when it ran on Broadway from 2008-2011. Critics have described the show as being both upbeat and sweetly sentimental.

Performances of the COC theatre department’s production of “In The Heights” will take place at 8 p.m. April 29-30 and May 6-7. Matinee performances will run at 2 p.m. Sunday May 1 and 8.

General admission tickets are $12. Students and seniors are $7.
