A first-alarm brushfire broke out Thursday just before 1:30 p.m. south of Eternal Valley Cemetery on Sierra Highway in Newhall.
One firefigher sustained an injury to his eyes and was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.
Southbound Sierra Highway was shut as Los Angeles County firefighters battled flames that rushed up a hill beneath Edison high-power lines, raising concerns that the blaze might encroach upon the populated Wildwood Canyon area.
But 115 firefighters and two water-dropping helicopters – one L.A. County and one L.A. City – held it to 2 acres a few hundred yards south of the old rock archway into the historic Needham Ranch, which is slated for future development as the Gate-King Industrial Park.
Winds were light and no structures were threatened. Knockdown was declared at 2:03 p.m. Mop-up was complete at 2:54 p.m.
