College of the Canyons freshman kicker/punter Tanner Brown has been named the Southern California Football Association (SCFA) National Division Special Teams/All-Purpose Player of the Week for his performance against Saddleback College in week one.
Brown enjoyed a successful start to his Cougar career in helping lead COC to a 19-6 victory over the Gauchos. Brown finished the game with 13 points after going 1-for-1 in PAT and 4-for-4 in FG attempts (21, 41, 40, 25), including three in the second half.
The freshman, who prepped at Saugus High School, also handled all punting and kickoff duties for the Cougars on Saturday. He totaled five punts for 154 yards with a long of 43 yards, and pinned the Gauchos behind the 20-yard line twice.
On kickoffs, Brown recorded six kicks for 356 yards with one touchback, an average of 59.3 yards per.

Canyons (1-0) entered the game vs. Saddleback ranked No. 5 in the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) Preseason Poll and No. 7 in the JC Athletic Bureau Preseason Head Coaches Poll. Saddleback was ranked No. 9 and No. 8, respectively.
The Cougars will next face Grossmont College (0-1) at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8. That contest will be played at Grossmont High School in El Cajon.
