College of the Canyons had to wait nearly a week for its rematch vs. Orange Coast College but eventually made the most of its opportunity with a 10-1 trouncing of the Pirates at Mike Gillespie Field on Friday, Feb. 21.
Canyons (2-8) returned the favor to Orange Coast (4-8) after the Pirates claimed a decisive 11-6 win over COC back on Jan. 29. The two sides had been scheduled to meet on Feb. 13, but had that meeting postponed due to weather.
The 10 runs scored by the Cougars represented a season high and helped to end a three-game losing streak.
The Canyons lineup produced eight hits with home runs coming from Frankie Malagon and Andrew Sherrell.
However, it was the work of starting pitcher Joseph Jasso that had the biggest impact. Jasso (1-2) pitched the full nine innings and claimed the win after allowing the lone run on four hits. He issued one walk and struck out five.
Evan Jaquez singled to bring home Jose Mariano in the home half of the first inning but neither team would score again until the sixth inning.
With the game tied 1-1 Jung Jun Lee‘s RBI double put Canyons ahead once more at 2-1. Later in the inning Malagon’s three-run shot put COC in control at 5-1.
Jaquez extended things further at 6-1 with an RBI single in the seventh before Sherrell homered to provide the exclamation point with a grand slam that doused all hopes of a Pirates comeback.
OCC starter Parker King took the loss after allowing five runs on five hits and four walks.
