The city of Santa Clarita has been recognized by the American Public Works Association (APWA) with two prestigious Public Works awards.

The City received a Project of the Year “Transportation Project” award for the Golden Valley Road Bridge Widening Project over the State Route 14 from the APWA Southern California Chapter and an award for “Best Environmental Project” for the Open Space Trails Volunteer Program by the APWA High Desert Branch.

Dedicated as “The Connie Worden-Roberts Memorial Bridge,” the Golden Valley Road Bridge widening over State Route 14 is the 8.5 mile crucial link of the Cross Valley Connector which connects State Route 14 to Interstate 5. The project widened the existing bridge from two to six lanes, added four through lanes, three lanes to access the north and southbound State Route 14, and installed new traffic signals and a new northbound access lane.

The Open Space Trails Volunteer Program was developed by the City in partnership with the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA). The volunteer program consists of MRCA volunteers that design, construct and maintain trails throughout the City’s open space properties. The MRCA volunteer crew also trains other volunteer groups that work on trails including Magic Mountain Employee Volunteer Day, Church of Latter Day Saints volunteers, local Eagle Scout and Girl Scouts projects, Santa Clarita Valley Bicycle Coalition and William S. Hart Summer Trails Crew.

The American Public Works Association is a nonprofit, professional association of public works agencies, private companies and individuals working to promote professional excellence and public awareness of public works through education, advocacy and the exchange of knowledge.
