Running back Earl Johnson ran for a school-record 363 yards, but seven turnovers cost the Golden Valley Grizzlies in a 38-20 loss Thursday night to San Marino at Harry Welch Stadium.
The football game was televised by SCVTV and will make its debut showing Friday at 11 p.m. on Time Warner Channel 20, AT&T U-verse Channel 99 and SCVTV.com.
Johnson also scored on runs of 62, 84 and 43 yards, but it was his 73-yard touchdown run that actually was the turning point in the game. A holding penalty nullified the score. Two plays later Reid Soliman threw an interception that led to a 1-yard Matt Wofford touchdown.
What would have been a 27-10 Grizzlies lead in the third quarter became a 20-17 lead, and momentum was on the Titans (3-2) shoulders. The next two possessions by Golden Valley (1-4) resulted in turnovers and Titans touchdowns.
Golden Valley totalled 419 yards of total offense while the defense held a San Marino running attack averaging nearly 250 yards per game to just 143 yards. The Grizzlies also recorded five sacks in the game.
Golden Valley quarterback Reid Soliman finished the game 6 for 18, 47 yards and five interceptions. He also fumbled the ball away once. Johnson lost a fumble as well.
