2000 - Movie stuntman Richard Farnsworth, 2000 Newhall Walk of Western Stars inductee, and Dr. Robert Rockwell, first COC president, die on the same day [Farnsworth story] [Rockwell story]
Farnsworth-Rockwell

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—After spending the first two weeks of the 2017-18 season on the road, the CSUN women’s basketball team returns home to host the ninth annual Warner Center Thanksgiving Basketball Classic this weekend.

In the semifinals, CSUN (0-4) faces Idaho (1-2) at 7 30 p.m. Friday night. Friday’s other semifinal features Arizona (2-0) and TCU (3-0). The Wildcats and the Horned Frogs begin play at 5 p.m.

The third-place game will take place Saturday night at 5 p.m. The championship game is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday night. CSUN has won the tournament on two occasions, most recently in 2014. Tickets are available via Ticketmaster (https://www.ticketmaster.com/Warner-Center-Marriott-Thanksgiving-Basketball-Classic-tickets/artist/2418121) or at the door.

CSUN coverage will be available on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Diginity Health as well as BigWest.tv. Alan Zinsmeister will be on the call. All links can be found on GoMatadors.com on the women’s basketball schedule page.

The Vandals travel to Northridge with a 1-2 record. Idaho dropped a 82-72 decision to Abilene Christian last Saturday. Mikayla Ferenz leads the team in scoring with a 22.6 points per game average. Geraldine McCorkell is second on the team in scoring (16.0) and leads the team in rebounding (6.0). Taylor Pierce averaged 14.0 points per game.

This is the 14th time that CSUN and Idaho are going to match up in women’s basketball. The Vandals lead the all-time series 10-3. The Matadors have won two of the past three in the series.

Arizona is 2-1 after dropping an 84-70 decision at Loyola Marymount Tuesday night. Five Wildcats average in double figures led by Marlee Kyles who is scoring 13.7 points per game. JaLea Bennett is averaging 12.0 points per game while Destiny Graham is averaging 11.7 points per game.

Kat Wright (11.0) and Luica Alsonso (10.7) round out the double figure scorers. Sam Thomas leads the team in rebounding (8.7). This would be the sixth time that CSUN and Arizona would be playing women’s basketball. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 4-1.

TCU dropped to 3-1 on the year Tuesday night as Yale defeated the Horned Frogs 82-72. Jordan Moore leads the team in scoring (17.5) and rebounding (6.8). She is shooting 56.6% from the field (30-of-53) for the season. Amber Ramierz (15.0), Amy Okonkwo (13.3), and Toree Thompson (11.0) are all averaging in double figures. This would be the first time that CSUN and TCU would be playing a women’s basketball game.

The Matadors lost a pair of games in New Orleans to complete CSUN’s stint in the Preseason WNIT. The Matadors lost 76-73 to the host Privateers last Friday night before losing 58-50 to Milwaukee on Saturday.

Junior Channon Fluker became the 11th CSUN women’s basketball to score at least 1,000 career points on Nov. 17 at New Orleans. Needing 16 entering the UNO game, the 6-4 center recorded 32 points and added 20 rebounds. Her 20 rebounds against the Privateers are the eighth most in a game this season by a Division I player.

Fluker has scored 1,023 points and is 99 points away from 10th place Patricia De La Riva (1,122, 1978-82). Just 64 games into her CSUN career, Fluker is already among the school leaders in several categories. As of Nov. 18, Fluker is first in career rebound average (701, 11.0), third in career scoring average (16.0), third in career field goal shooting (423-820, .516), fourth in career blocks (120), seventh in career rebounds, and ninth in career field goals (423).
