MODESTO – Matt Dennis outdueled his counterpart for six innings, and the Lancaster JetHawks bullpen finished off a 3-1 win over the Modesto Nuts in the series finale on Thursday night at John Thurman Field.
Dennis (5-8) improved to 5-1 in seven road starts with the victory. He allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
Dennis and Reggie McClain (2-5) traded zeroes into the fifth inning when the JetHawks (5-3, 38-40) broke the scoreless tie. Brett Stephens delivered a two-run triple to put his club on the board and Manny Melendez followed with a RBI-single to make it 3-0.
The Nuts (1-7, 31-47) scored their lone run in the sixth. Evan White drew a one-out walk and scored on Kyle Lewis’ double.
Ben Bowden and Bryan Baker each tossed scoreless innings of relief to bridge the gap between Dennis and closer Reid Humphreys. Humphreys struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to notch his league-leading 17th save.
Brian Serven singled to begin Lancaster’s rally in the fifth, extending his hitting streak to 14 games.
The win gave Lancaster its first four-game series victory since taking three out of four against Modesto in the season-opening series at The Hangar. The JetHawks are 2-0-7 in four-game series this season.
Here’s the box score.
The club’s season-long nine-game road trip continues on Friday with the first of five games in Stockton. Brandon Gold (5-4) is slated to start for the JetHawks opposite Xaver Altamirano (1-0). First pitch is 7:10 p.m. at Banner Island Ballpark.
