Devin Dyer poured in a season-high 25 points and four teammates scored in double figures to lead The Master’s College to an 86-63 shellacking of Corban of Oregon in an NCCAA West Region semi-final playoff game Wednesday night in Bross Gym.

The win advances the Mustangs to the region championship game on Thursday evening when they will host Hope International, a 64-63 victor over California Baptist in the other semi-final. The rout also snapped the club’s five-game losing skid and lifted its record to 18-14.

After struggling for much of the year from behind the arc, the Mustangs finally found the range against the Warriors and Dyer was at the forefront to keep his club’s season alive. The junior guard buried a three-pointer 27 seconds into play and the Mustangs were never headed. It was the first of three trifectas he would toss in during the opening 20 minutes, leading the club’s sparkling 10-17 performance from behind the arc in the first half.

Three-pointers from Leif Karlberg (2-4 in the first half) and Jon Hogan pushed the club’s lead to 11-5 but the Warriors stayed close and only trailed 15-12 with just over 13 minutes left in the half.

However, over the next seven minutes, the Mustangs started to rain down the treys and turned the game into a runaway. It started with a Casey Trujeque three-pointer at the 12:36 mark and when Chris Patureau capped off the decisive 22-7 run with a layup with 5:36 remaining, the Mustangs held a 37-19 advantage.

Including Trujeque’s triple, fifteen of those points were scored from behind the arc, fueled by Patureau’s trio of trifectas and another one by Dyer. The Mustangs kept the foot on the gas, too, rolling to a 47-25 lead at the break as Karlberg drained another trey and, fittingly, Dyer capped things off from long range for the half’s final points.

Helped by their sizzling, long-range show, the Mustangs hit nearly 61 percent of their shots from the field in the opening half while holding Corban to a paltry 27 percent mark. Dyer led the way with 15 points while Patureau contributed 11 more.

Although they weren’t as prolific offensively over the final 20 minutes, the Mustangs kept the defensive pressure up and methodically pulled away. Fittingly, the margin went beyond the 30-point plateau when consecutive threes from Karlberg and Trujeque made it a 67-36 game with12:34 left to play.

On their next possession, the Mustangs enjoyed their largest lead of the night when Hogan threw down a dunk for a 33-point advantage. The freshman forward, who tallied 16 points off the bench, drained his club’s final trifecta of the evening for a 76-49 lead with 6:49 left to play and the Mustangs cruised home from there.

Joining Dyer and Hogan in double figures were Anthony Cammon (12) and Karlberg and Patureau with 11 points apiece. After shooting 43 percent over the final 20 minutes, the Mustangs finished with a 51 percent mark for the evening.

Looking ahead to Thursday night’s game with Hope International, the Mustangs split the GSAC season series with the Royals, beating them in overtime on January 7 before falling to them at home on February 4. Tip-off is set for 7:30pm in Bross Gym.
