Earth Day Clowns are coming to Santa Clarita Valley schools to teach students about saving water, solar power and recycling trash.

“The Earth Day Clowns present the Conservation Conversation” is an original 40-minute theatrical presentation touring local elementary schools now through the end of May.

The piece was devised during rehearsals between the director and the cast and follows three characters as they figure what it is reduce, recycle and conserve.

The three clowns are in the “hobo or tramp’ tradition of clowns, such as Charlie Chaplin, Emmett Kelly, Sr., or Red Skelton.

“This is a wonderful, fun way to bring a very important message to local students”, said David Stears, executive director of the company. “Everyone makes a difference when it comes to conservation.”

The production was director by Jeffrey Wienckowski, with scenic design by Jay Africa, costume design by Lynn McQuown, and sound design by Steven “Nanook” Burkholder. The cast includes Connor Kelly-Eiding, Brandon Pugmire, and Nathan Turner.

The program is sponsored by local organizations, including Castaic Lake Water Agency, Chiquita Canyon, and Newhall County Water District. Major funding was provided by the city of Santa Clarita as part of the Community Grants process, specifically to reach local Title One schools. The production is scheduled exclusively in partnership with the PAC K12 program at College of the Canyons, and will reach more than 8,000 students this spring. The first performance is Thursday April 16 at James Foster Elementary Schools. Earth Day Clowns has 26 performances at 12 school sites reaching more than 8,000 this spring.
