Firehouse Subs celebrated its grand opening on Wednesday in Valencia.

The restaurant located on Creekside is firehouse inspired and offers a large menu of hot sub sandwiches, four different kinds of salads and chili.

“We do a turkey and ham which is our Hook and Ladder.” said Julie Fick, owner and general manager. “This sandwich happens to be the number one sandwich across the nation.”

Sandwiches all come “fully involved” which means mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, onion and deli mustard with a dill pickle on the side.

“The other thing that makes us unique is our hot sauce bar,” said Jennifer Press, franchise owner. “We have over 35 different kinds of hot sauces ranging from one to ten in spiciness.”

The three year process to bring the sub sandwich restaurant to Santa Clarita was started with branch owners Fick and Press.

The two live in Santa Clarita and their husbands are the area representatives for the franchise.

“We are a very tight knit community, though we have grown a lot in the 17 years I have been here it’s still that down home, small town feel.” said Press. “We wanted to put our mark on the community we live in a positive way.”

Local firehouse memorabilia and photos line the walls and add to the individuality of the restaurant.

Each restaurant has an individually painted mural that depicts the culture of the surrounding area.

The mural inside the new Valencia location shows the Newhall Walk of Stars sign, Six Flags Magic Mountain, oak trees, a firetruck and fire helicopter.

The first restaurant opened its doors in Florida and now has become a nationwide chain.

“In 2005 the founders were involved in Hurricane Katrina, with feeding the first responders and the survivors.” said Flick. “So basically that changed the whole concept and made it more about giving back to the community.”

The natural disaster made founders think about doing more for the first responders around the United States, so the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation was started.

The foundation focuses on pooling donations nationwide and giving grants to EMT’s, police or firefighters that could help improve their life saving capability.

The sub sandwich restaurant is new to Southern California with only 14 locations.
