Team USA shooter Kim Rhode made Olympic history by winning the gold medal in skeet at the Summer Games in London.

Rhode, who trains and practices in Newhall, hit 99 out of 100 targets and became the first athlete to medal in five Olympic Games in a row. She surpassed Carl Lewis and Jackie Joyner-Kersee, among others, who medaled in four straight Summer Games.

Rhode has three gold medals, a silver and a bronze medal in shooting. She won her first gold medal in the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta. Speedskater Bonnie Blair and Joyner-Kersee  in track are the only other women who have won more Olympic medals. They both have six.

The USA men’s volleyball team, with Saugus High grad David Smith, won its first match in the Summer Olympics, sweeping Serbia in three games. (Smith subbed and didn’t see game play.)

First-time Olympian Matt Anderson led Team USA with 18 points. He had 16 kills and two blocks.

The United States, ranked fifth in the world, continues pool play on Tuesday against Germany.

After Day 2 of the Summer Olympics, China has won the most medals with 12, six of them gold. The United States in second with 11 medals and three golds.

In the Valley Invitational Baseball League playoffs, Saugus and Valencia lost in the semifinals and were eliminated.

Valencia lost to Valley North, 3-2. Saugus lost to Loyola, 4-1.

Valley North plays Loyola in the championship game at Birmingham High School today.

In auto racing, Canyon High graduate Greg Pursley won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at Colorado National Speedway.

The reigning West Series champion started on the front row with pole winner Dylan Kwasniewski. Pursley took the lead on the first lap and was out front for the entire race, including a green-white-checkered flag finish.

Pursley also took over the lead in the West Series standings. He has a three-point lead over Kwasniewski.

In baseball, the Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw shut out the San Francisco Giants, 4-0, completed the weekend sweep and moved into a tie for first place in the National League West standings.

Kershaw tossed a five-hitter and the Dodgers shut out the Giants for the second game in a row. It was the first time since both teams moved to California that the Dodgers posted consecutive shutouts against the Giants.

The Dodgers are back home to start a series against the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight. Aaron Harang is set to start for the Dodgers. Trevor Cahill will be on the hill for the Diamondbacks.
