Responding to concerns there would be only one way in and one way out of the future high school in Castaic’s Romero Canyon, the William S. Hart Union High School District has reissued the school’s initial planning report to include a second access route.

It means that when the detailed environmental documents are released, they will include two options for vehicular access.

Option 1 is the original plan for Sloan Canyon Road to be extended west to the 48-acre school site, for use by cars. Romero Canyon Road would be paved all they way to Hasley Canyon Road but would be gated south of the school, opened only for emergency vehicles.

Option 2 includes the Sloan Canyon Road extension but adds a second route from the south. From the west end of Hillcrest Parkway, cars could travel north on Sloan and use Barringer Road to cut over to Romero Canyon Road.

Under Option 2, Romero Canyon Road wouldn’t be paved south of Barringer because it wouldn’t be needed for emergency access, the report states.

Ultimately it will be up to the school board to pick one option or the other.

In the meantime, the public has until Nov. 10 to comment on the planning document, which is available from the school district office. The document is the “Notice of Preparation,” which identifies the topics to be addressed in the project’s environmental impact report – such as traffic, land use, air quality and water availability.

According to the notice, the school would eventually house 2,600 students and 175 staff members. It’s expected to open for ninth graders in the 2014-15 school year and add one grade level each year as the initial ninth graders move up.

Current enrollment projections are 310 students in 2014, 582 in 2015, 862 in 2017 and 1,166 in 2018, the report states. Nonetheless, the school will be built for 2,600 students from the outset, possibly with two stories, officials have said. It would include an 800-seat performing arts facility and a lighted, 5,000-seat football  stadium.
