A house fire was reported Tuesday shortly after 10 p.m. in the 28700 block of Forest Meadow Place in Castaic. Flames were shooting through the roof before Los Angeles County Fire Department crews managed to knock down the blaze at 10:52 p.m.

Fire officials said the fire was accidental and electrical. SCV Sheriff’s Lt. Mark Hershey said the cause of the fire was related to something the homeowner did wrong with the lights he used to cultivate his marijuana plants.

The homeowner, Mark E. Smith, 45, had a medical marijuana card and was believed to be growing plants for his personal use, Hershey said.

Nonetheless, the plants were seized due to questions about the validity of Smith’s card. Those issues must be resolved before Smith can get back his plants, Hershey said.

No arrests were made and nobody was injured in the fire, officials said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department spokeswoman Stephanie English said four engines responded to the fire, along with the battalion chief, one paramedic squad, one ladder truck and a HAZMAT crew.

Structural damage was estimated at $250,000, with an additional $50,000 in property loss. Public records show the house is an 1,183-square-foot, single-family home built in 1988, owned by Smith and his wife, Marcie, also 45.

Forest Meadow Place is located off of Quail Valley Road in Sloan Canyon past the western terminus of Parker Road.
