1875 - John F. Powell, an Irish immigrant, becomes Justice of the Peace [story]
John F. Powell

At a special meeting on Monday night, the Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency’s Board of Directors will consider and may approve the appointment of Dante Acosta to the board as the representative of Los Angeles County Waterworks District 6, Val Verde.

Acosta was most recently a member of the California Assembly representing the 38th District, which includes the Santa Clarita Valley.

If Acosta wins appointment, he will immediately take the oath of office and be sworn in as a member of the agency’s Board of Directors.

The Jan. 1 expiration of Waterworks District 36 board member Dean Efstathiou’s term created the opening. The board has until Jan. 15 to seat a replacement.

LA County Fifth District Supervisor Kathryn Barger nominated Acosta to fill the seat, the only one appointed. Other board members are elected.

The vote was originally scheduled for the board’s Dec. 18 meeting but tabled after numerous public comments questioned Acosta’s professional qualifications for the post and whether Barger’s appointment was political.

After voting whether to seat Acosta Monday night, board members are also slated to discuss and approve the term of office for board president and vice president(s), and discuss and approve one or two vice president(s), according to the meeting’s agenda.

Following the election of the new president and vice president(s), the board will conduct its regular business.

Read the complete agenda here.

The meeting is slated to start at 6:30 p.m. in the boardroom at the Rio Vista Water Treatment Plant, 27234 Bouquet Canyon Road, Santa Clarita 91350. The Discovery Room will be open to the public at 6 p.m.

The meeting will also be a teleconference, with directors Ed Colley and Jacque McMillan dialing in from Montana and Sacramento, respectively.

Possible conflict of interest? Has Nestle given Acosta a contribution, like the NRA ro other politicians,so Acosta will keep profits flowing for Nestle, like millions for a minimal payment of like $85.00?

Nestle? The water board covers only the Santa Clarita Valley. Not California or the United States.

  6. Kelly Broussard says:

Dante Acosta was voted out of office. The people of Santa Clarita do not want him in control of the public trust here. How is this workaround to put him back in a position of power even legal?
Maybe Kathryn Barger needs to go.

  7. Nadiya Littlewarrior says:

Just when I thought we got rid of him. He is in no way representative of the larger population of SCV….just shameful that he can keep a hold on power of any kind.

  8. jim says:

Hey there SCVNews Chump! Nestle is the largest water owner/user/provider and drainer of our local mountain water sources in these parts! Check your own resources since I found them on your website.

Nestle owns Arrowhead Water which sells their juice based on their water rights in the San Gabriel Mountains – which are under intense scrutiny based on lawsuits and potential litigation that could force them to lose those ancient and foggy rights.

Does that make you think a little bit before just reporting things about which you know nothing?

It’s called reporting, not repeating the dogma you’ve been fed.

  9. jim says:

SCV Dude, speak not that of which you are ignorant. Nestle owns so much of SoCal water rights that every single drop is important. Most of the local news agencies know about it; how come you don’t?

“U.S. allows Nestle to keep taking water from Southern California forest” – AP 6-28-2018

IF you don’t know the history of water wars in California then you are not only ignorant, you don’t know what your job is. Be sure you tell your boss Leon just how little you know about doing your job.

And by the way, tell Leon who just pantsed you.

Oh, and I still want to know what the “stipend” and other emoluments are for a Director of the SCVWATER Board of Directors.
