The JetHawks beat the Lake Elsinore Storm and held onto their first place ranking after their game Monday night. Palmdale native Mylz Jones went 3-for-4 with a bases clearing triple to lead the JetHawks over the Storm, 13-6, at The Hangar in the series opener.
With Rancho Cucamonga’s victory over Inland Empire, the JetHawks retained sole possession of first place in the South Division with six games to play in the first half. They are one ahead of Rancho Cucamonga and two up on Lake Elsinore, who they play the next two games. Lancaster finishes the first half with four games at Rancho Cucamonga against the Quakes.
Lancaster fell behind 3-0 in the opening frame, but scored once in the second before two consecutive four-run innings in the third and fourth.
Brian Mundell delivered an RBI double in the third, one of his three hits on the night. He reached four times and drove in two. His leads the league with 54 runs batted in. Jones’s triple highlighted the fourth inning and helped bring his average up to .299. He now has an eight game hitting streak and is 15-for-28 (.536) during that span.
Brendan Rodgers extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a single in the first inning. He added another hit later in the contest and finished 2-for-6. His batting average on the season sits at .400 to lead the California League.
Garrett Hampson launched a two-run homer to dead center field to cap a three-run eighth inning for the JetHawks, his third of the season. He drove in three runs on the night.
Jesus Tinoco (4-1) picked up the win for Lancaster after recovering from a rocky first inning. After the first four batters of the game reached, he set down eight of the next nine. The right-hander allowed four earned runs in five innings. Carlos Polanco followed by allowing a run in 1.2 innings. Logan Cozart retired all seven hitters he faced to pick up his first save.
The teams combined to commit seven errors in the contest, five by Lake Elsinore.
The three-game series continues on Tuesday night at The Hangar. Right-hander Craig Schlitter (8-1) will start for Lancaster against left-hander and Palmdale native Jerry Keel (0-0). First pitch is 6:35 p.m.
