STOCKTON – The JetHawks scored twice in the ninth inning but fell a run shy of a comeback in a 4-3 loss to the Stockton Ports on Monday night at Banner Island Ballpark.
Lancaster (7-5, 40-42) trailed, 4-1, entering the final frame and scored two runs on four hits before Manny Melendez grounded out to second base to end the game. Jacob Bosiokovic, the potential tying run, was left at second base.
Vince Fernandez and Tyler Nevin started the ninth with back-to-back singles. Bosiokovic later delivered a one-out hit to score Fernandez. Steven Linkous brought home Nevin with a sac-fly, but that was all the JetHawks could manage. Angel Duno finished the game to pick up his ninth save.
The game featured a pitchers duel between starters David Hill (2-4) and Zack Erwin (7-5). Stockton (8-4, 52-30) started the scoring against Hill in the third inning when Collin Theroux led off with a solo home run. Luis Barrera followed with a triple and scored on a Nate Mondou base hit.
The runs snapped a 23.0 consecutive scoreless innings streak for the JetHawks dating back to the sixth inning on Friday night. They had shut out Stockton in the previous two games.
Colton Welker answered with a solo home run to start the fourth inning against Erwin. It was his ninth home run of the season and extended his hitting streak to six games.
Hill would end up allowing two runs on six hits over six innings with six strikeouts. Erwin allowed one run on two hits in six innings.
Bryan Baker came on in relief in the seventh inning. He walked Theroux before giving up a two-run homer to Barrera.
The five-game series and nine-game road trip conclude Tuesday evening in Stockton. Antonio Santos (0-0) is scheduled to make his Lancaster debut on the mound against Dustin Hurlbutt (2-3). First pitch is 6:30 p.m.
