RANCHO CUCAMONGA – Avery Romero delivered a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning, but the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes rallied for a 6-5 win over the Lancaster JetHawks on Sunday afternoon at LoanMart Field.
The JetHawks (61-53, 23-21) couldn’t hold two late leads and dropped the series finale to settle for a series split against the first-place Quakes (64-50, 28-16).
Romero enjoyed a 3-for-4 afternoon including a two-run home run in the seventh inning to give the JetHawks a 5-4 lead after they had fallen behind in the sixth.
The Quakes rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. Helmis Rodriguez, who was making just his fifth start of the season, tossed five scoreless innings including a stretch in which he retired 11 consecutive hitters. After getting the first out in the sixth, Rodriguez ran into trouble. He allowed back-to-back singles before Luke Raley delivered a two-run triple to get the Quakes on the board.
Marc Magliaro entered from the bullpen in relief of Rodriguez and allowed a game-tying base-hit to Ibandel Isabel. Ariel Sandoval delivered a double later in the frame to give Rancho its first lead.
Romero followed a two-out Sam Hilliard double with the home run.
Magliaro pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh but reliever Logan Cozart was unable to protect the lead in the eighth. He issued back-to-back walks to begin the frame before giving up back-to-back RBI-singles with one out to Sandoval and Brandon Montgomery.
Here’s the box score.
The JetHawks are off today before opening a three-game series with the Visalia Rawhide on Tuesday at The Hangar. First pitch is 6:35 p.m.
