1839 - Judge John F. Powell born in Galway, Ireland [story]
John F. Powell

Santa Clarita residents can learn how to perform lifesaving Hands-Only CPR at one of four “Sidewalk CPR” events set for Santa Clarita on Thursday, June 6.

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital will host events in front of the hospital’s main entrance and at the Old Town Newhall Library between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at both locations.

Separately, the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the city of Santa Clarita will host Sidewalk CPR events at Westfield Valencia Town Center and at Central Park from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Hands-Only CPR demonstrations will be part of Sidewalk CPR day, which is part of National CPR Week, sponsored by the American Heart Association and the LA County Emergency Medical Services Agency.

Since the event began in 2016, Henry Mayo officials have trained more than 220 community members in CPR.

According to the AHA, each year more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur in the United States. About 90 percent of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival.

Hands-Only CPR has been shown to be as effective as conventional CPR for cardiac arrest at home, at work or in public.

Hands-Only CPR is comprised of two easy steps, performed in this order: (1) Call 911 if you see someone suddenly collapse; and (2) Push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of a familiar song that has 100 to 120 beats per minute, such as “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees. Visit heart.org/handsonlycpr to watch a 90-second Hands-Only CPR instructional video.
