College of the Canyons women’s soccer played to 3-0 win over Antelope Valley College on Friday night, Nov. 7, with the Cougars scoring a pair of second-half goals to ensure a Sophomore Night victory.
Canyons (14-3-2, 8-3-2) inched a step closer to seizing a Western State Conference, South Division championship while also completing the season sweep over Antelope Valley (4-9-7, 3-5-4).
COC freshman Emily Thompson played a key role in the victory with a pair of goals, while sophomore Bailey Williamson was involved in all three scoring plays.
Thompson’s first score came late in the 10th minute on an assist from Williamson to make it an early 1-0 advantage for the Cougars, which is where things stayed headed into the break.
Later, Thompson doubled her efforts with a goal in the 50th minute, her fifth of the season, again coming off a touch from Williamson. The assist was Williamson’s team-leading 10th of the season.
In the 70th minute, Willimson got in on the action with a goal of her own, bringing her season total to 12. This time it was Thompson returning the favor with an assist on the play that made it a 3-0 score.
COC goalkeeper Rebecca Ferguson (12-2-2) earned the win with her ninth shutout. Her two saves in the match upped her season total to 49.
Canyons will play a final conference match at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at L.A. Valley College. A win vs. the Monarchs would ensure at least a share of the WSC, South title.
The Cougars then close out the regular season on Nov. 14 at home vs. Ventura College in a non-conference meeting scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Postseason play is set to begin the following week.
