CSUN swept the Big West Conference weekly Player of the Week awards, the league office announced Monday.
After leading their team to an undefeated week on the pitch, senior goalkeeper Jovani McCaskill collected her fourth career Big West Defensive Player of the Week nod while freshman midfielder Sydney Gilbert earned Big West Offensive Player of the Week honors.
The duo helped CSUN register four points to move into first place in the conference standings with a week to play.
McCaskill made Matador history last week with a pair of shutouts against UC Irvine and UC Davis to become the school’s career shutout leader with 28. Her accomplishment comes a season after setting a new single-season shutout record with 14. On the Big West’s all-time shutout list, McCaskill moved into fourth place with her performances.
On Thursday, McCaskill tied the career shutout record with four saves including three in the second half in a 1-0 win over UC Irvine. The victory over the Anteaters propelled CSUN into first place in the conference standings. Three days later, McCaskill had to go a full 110 minutes and tally two saves to break the school record in an 0-0 draw at UC Davis.
This season, McCaskill has seven shutouts and 61 saves to go along with an 0.97 goals-against-average.
Gilbert’s first career goal would prove to be the difference maker in CSUN’s victory over UC Irvine. With the match deadlocked at 0-0, Destinney Duron launched a throw-in deep into the box where Gilbert found room and knocked in the go-ahead goal. The Matadors would hold for the victory giving Gilbert her first career game winner.
In her first season with the Matadors, Gilbert has appeared in all 18 matches and made 10 starts. The midfielder has 10 shots on the season with four on goal in over 700 minutes of action.
The Matadors head into their final regular season match on Thursday with an opportunity to clinch their second-straight Big West title. CSUN can earn at least a share of the conference’s regular season championship with a win. This season’s Big West Conference Tournament will be held at Matador Soccer Field with the semifinal matches set for Thursday, Nov. 2.
CSUN hosts Long Beach State on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. on Senior Night. The Matadors will honor their five-member senior class prior to the match in a special ceremony.
