LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of Antelope Valley Pioneers (2-9) were defeated Thursday evening by the No. 18-ranked Tigers of Dakota Wesleyan University (11-3) in overtime, 92-91, in intercollegiate men’s basketball NAIA non-conference action in Las Vegas, Nev.
The Pioneers would trail by as many as 10 points in the opening half but would rally to tie the contest with just 39 seconds left in the half, and would go on to trail by just two at halftime, 41-39.
UAV trailed by 13 points with 11:55 remaining in the contest but would rally to retake the lead with four minutes on the clock, and would increase its lead to as many as seven with less than two minutes left to go.
The Tigers would close the final 1:29 on an 11-4 run to tie things at 80-80, forcing overtime. It was tightly contested in the overtime period, but DWU would edge the Pioneers by one point in overtime, 12-11 en route to winning the contest, 92-91.
Senior forward Christian Drayton (Lufkin, TX) led all Pioneers with 26 points and also added 11 points to complete his sixth double-double of the season, senior guard Miles Nolen-Webb (San Diego, CA) added 18 points, a team-high five assists, five rebounds and one steal, and junior forward Kane Keil (Auckland, New Zealand) added scored 11 points, two rebounds and one assist.
UAV hit 34-of-69 field goals (.493), 7-of-26 three-pointers (.269), 16-of-29 free throws (.552), and outrebounded the Tigers, 41-36. UAV committed 19 turnovers and stole the ball 13 times. DWU made 30-of-61 shots (.492), 11-of-27 three-pointers (.407) and 21-of-31 free throws (.677) and committed 20 turnovers and stole the ball from UAV nine times.
NEXT GAME: Coached by Darwin Cook, the Pioneers remain on the road to play The Master’s University in a non-conference NAIA contest on Friday, Dec. 28 at 6 p.m. PST in Santa Clarita.
