GATC 1 - June 2013

A number of issues were discussed at the June Chamber Government Affairs & Transportation Committee (GA/TC)-from transportation and County issues to law enforcement and legislative updates. GA/TC Co-Chair and Ex. Dir. of the Golden State Gateway Coalition, Victor Lindenheim, GA/TC and Poole & Shaffery partner, Hunt Braly brought the meeting to order.

While attendance was lighter than usual because many members were at the Reagan building in Downtown LA for the High Speed Rail hearing, Santa Clarita Community College District Board of Trustees Member Bruce Fortine was present along with a dozen or so community leaders.

Lindenheim brought up the fact that Metro is pushing to update their long-range plan and inquired as to the vision of its new CEO-to which Metro representative Mark Dierking said he would report on at the July meeting.

Jennings Imel, Western Regional Manager for the U.S. Chamber, spoke about work being done on the transportation bill for federal highways and expected only short-term fixes of the highway trust fund through the 2016 elections. Imel also reported there was a lot going on about trade, especially on Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) which has been in the national news.

Quote of the Week – Stuart Waldman, Valley Industry Commerce Association (VICA)

“A spike in the minimum wage could force companies to raise costs, sending consumers to neighboring counties to purchase products at lower prices. Employers may also resort to cutting jobs to compensate for higher labor costs, leaving hardworking people out of a job.”
