[KHTS] – A dead body found in a Newhall apartment has Homicide Bureau detectives with the Sheriff’s Department investigating the scene of a burnt-out unit.
Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel arrived on scene at the 26700 block of North Oak Crossing Road, near the Friendly Valley area of Canyon Country at 11:35 p.m., officials said.
“Fire was dispatched at 11:25 p.m.,” said Supervisor Keith Mora of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. “The call came in from an apartment across the street.”
A badly burned victim was found inside, Mora said, noting officials on scene were not able to determine the victim’s age, or whether the victim was a man or woman.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze by 11:55 p.m., officials said.
Initially an ambulance was dispatched, but fire officials declared the victim dead at the scene and called Coroner’s Office officials, who were reported on scene shortly after 4 a.m.
“They listed the cause of the fire as ‘unknown-further investigation needed,’” Mora said, adding the damage report had not yet been submitted.
The fire was confined to one unit, Mora said.
An autopsy had not yet been completed on the victim, said Kelly Yagerlener of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
Sgt. Ken Clark of the Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Unit is overseeing an investigation into the circumstances around the body, according to officials.
A determination as to whether a homicide took place has not yet been made, and a call to Clark was not immediately returned.
The Arson/Explosives Unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is also investigating the incident, officials said.
