NORTHRIDGE – California State University, Northridge’s dance program aims to provide a dynamic experience for students to collaborate with professionals and peers in all aspects of dance.

CSUN’s kinesiology department will host “Colaboratoria: Graduate Student, Faculty, and Alumni Dance Concert” on Nov. 14 and 15 to reflect current social concerns at the personal, national and international levels.

“Colaboratoria” will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14, and 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, in the Plaza Del Sol Performance Hall, located on the East side of campus at 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge. The show will consist of 11 dance pieces dispersed between two acts.

Paula Thomson, professor and dance coordinator in CSUN’s Department of Kinesiology, said she is looking forward to having the dancers and choreographers showcase their art form at the concert.

“We have great dancers and choreographers at CSUN, and that’s the fundamental reason for the concert,” said Thomson. “Because they are graduate students and faculty members, these dancers and choreographers have a mature and sophisticated creative vision. There is a lot of variety as well, from the lighthearted to the more serious.”

Through their movement and emotions, choreographers, including Jonathan Kim and Liezel De Guzman will explore what it feels like to be silenced and the struggle to find a voice and speak out, in a piece titled “Break the Silence.” Dancers will also perform Thomson’s piece, “Shadows of Darkness,” that “portray the line between victimization and perpetration around the PTSD people suffer when they are placed in untenable survival need circumstances.”

Lynn Neuman, artistic director of Artichoke Dance Company, an organization that specializes in performances that shine a light on environmental issues, will present an excerpt from her work, “Future Currents: The Los Angeles River,” which aims to raise awareness to the environmental complexities of the Los Angeles River. This piece will be fully showcased on April 5, 2019 at CSUN’s Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts and by the LA River in Frog Town.

General admission tickets for Colaboratoria will be sold for $20 each, and students and senior citizens can purchase tickets for $15. To reserve seats, call the Associated Students Box Office at (818) 677-2488.
