The deadline for poets to submit poems for the city of Santa Clarita’s 2020 Sidewalk Poetry Project is Thursday, Oct. 31.
According to the city’s Sidewalk Poetry website, the short poems should be written by Santa Clarita residents and individuals with connections or ties to the city.
The Sidewalk Poetry Project stamps original poetry into sections of damaged sidewalks that are being rehabilitated, so final locations will be determined by availability.
Selected poems may be placed near parks, bus stops, trailheads, crosswalks, schools or shopping centers.
The 2020 Theme: Poetry of Place. Poems should reflect the cultural, natural and shared spaces in our community.
Eligibility: All writers, amateur and professional, are invited to submit poetry for consideration. The Sidewalk Poetry Project contest is open to all ages. No previous experience or publication necessary. The poem must be the original work of the entrant.
Limitations: Short poem submissions may be free or rhyming verse (Free Form, Haiku, Distich, Cinquain, etc.). Poems must be no more than five (5) lines (including title if applicable) with a maximum of 32 characters including spaces per line, and 160 characters overall (including spaces). Poems in languages other than English must be accompanied by an English translation.
One (1) entry per individual may be submitted during the contest; no team entries are permitted. Past applicants are welcome to submit.
Compensation and Recognition: Selected winners will receive monetary compensation of a $150 stipend and have the opportunity to meet to discuss their work with a professor of poetry. Winners will also be recognized on the city’s website and public art app directory and are encouraged to attend the Sidewalk Poetry Project dedication scheduled for spring 2020.
Deadline: Entries must be received by October 31, 2019.
Submissions: All submissions become the property of the City and may be published in print and/or on the City’s website. All entries must be submitted electronically at http://santaclaritaarts.com/sidewalk-poetry-program-2020/. Entrants must complete the entry form in its entirety to qualify.
