As summer begins and triple digit temperatures become inevitable, so does the unconditional pursuit of two gentlemen trying to make a difference in the lives of our youth here in Santa Clarita by showing them that basketball translates into everyday life and can be used as a tool to reach success in all aspects of life as well.
Taylor Statham and Jawhar Purdy returned home a few months ago from playing professional basketball overseas in the Philippines and Malaysia. In just a few months time, they have hosted two basketball clinics together for middle school and high school age boys and girls at the well-renowned Boys and Girls Club in Newhall.
Purdy and Statham, both graduates of Saugus High School and Golden Valley High School respectively, have decided to use their high level basketball knowledge and credentials to provide a new experience for kids and their parents at these events.
Basketball clinics/camps are conducted throughout the year here in Santa Clarita, however it is extremely rare that the hosts including the entire coaching staff have at least college or professional basketball experience.
On June 16th starting at 10am, not only will kids (ages 5-12) experience basketball instruction at a high level but there is also an added bonus to this event as well. After the basketball clinic ends, an exhibition All Star basketball game comprised of NBA Development League, overseas, and collegiate basketball players will take place and bring in a new atmosphere for everyone to attend for free. Sponsors such as Ball Out, TuMe Water, NeVer Be Average, and others will be at there as well.
An event like this is not something basketball fans of all ages would want to miss and is a great way to start the summer of 2016 off the right way.
Registration is $60 and can be completed online at www.stathamacademy.com. All payments will be received at the door.
