The Santa Clarita Valley has gone two whole weeks without a report of a rabid bat found locally. Knock on wood, but rabies-infected bats had been turning up regularly throughout the SCV this summer. The last was reported Sept. 27 in Canyon Country, preceded by two in Valencia about two weeks earlier.
Thirteen rabid bats have been found this year in Santa Clarita, which has the highest concentration in Los Angeles County where a total 34 have been reported in 2011. Eight to 10 are normal for the entire county in a typical year, and health officials don’t know why the numbers have spiked.
According to the county Department of Public Health, the past two weeks saw two new cases of rabies in bats – the most common carriers of the virus – one in Agoura Hills and one in Long Beach.
Be wary of bats flying in the daytime or lying on the ground. Bite marks can be small and difficult to see. If you think you’ve been bitten, call 911.
