The West Ranch boys basketball team is ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1A preseason poll.
The Wildcats are off to a 4-1 start, their only loss coming against Loyola in the championship game of the Santa Monica Tournament. Loyola is ranked No. 4 in the Division 1AA poll.
El Toro is the top-ranked team in Division 1A. Santa Monica is No. 2.
The Foothill League is well-represented through the Southern Section preseason boys basketball polls.
Valencia is No. 7 in Division 1AA. Canyon is No. 5 in Division 2AA. Saugus is No. 12 in Division 2A. Hart is No. 5 in Division 3AAA.
Hart improved to 6-0 with a 69-44 win over Besant Hill in the first round of the La Canada Tournament. Myles Franklin scored 21 points for the Indians.
Santa Clarita Christian is No. 9 in Division 5A. The Trinity Classical Academy boys basketball team is No. 4 in the Division 6 poll.
On the girls side, Canyon is the only ranked team from the Foothill League in the Southern Section preseason polls. The Canyon girls are No. 5 in the Division 2AA rankings. Cajon is No. 1.
The Saugus girls beat Buckley, 57-40, in the Milken Tournament. Justice Bennett led the Centurions with 15 points. They play Archer in the next round of the tournament tonight.
In high school soccer, the Trinity boys shut out Santa Clarita Christian, 3-0, in a match played at The Master’s College.
Michael Stratton scored two goals and had an assist for Trinity.
The Golden Valley girls scored on a free kick and tied Crescenta Valley, 1-1. Joanna Lagunas tied the score with a goal off a free kick late in the second half.

In baseball, another Hart High grad was involved in a blockbuster trade in the major leagues.
Pitcher Trevor Bauer was dealt to the Cleveland Indians in a three-team swap. Bauer, considered one of the top minor league pitching prospects, was one of nine players involved in the deal between the Arizona Diamondbacks, Cincinnati Reds and Indians.
Centerfielder Drew Stubbs went from the Reds to the Indians. Pitchers Matt Albers and Bryan Shaw went from the Diamondbacks to the Indians.
Outfielder Shin-Soo Choo and infielder Jason Donald went from the Indians to the Reds. The Diamondbacks landed reliever Tony Sipp, first baseman Lars Anderson and shortstop prospect Didi Gregorius .
In the NBA, the Lakers lost again, this time to the lowly Cleveland Cavaliers, 100-94. Kobe Bryant scored 42 points, but the Lakers dropped to 9-13. The Lakers have lost eight games in a row when Bryant scores 30 points or more. They are 1-10 this season when he goes over the 30-point mark.
The Clippers won their seventh game in a row, 94-89, on the road against the Chicago Bulls. Blake Griffin scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds.
