The Master’s College baseball team built an early lead and beat the Azusa Pacific, the fifth ranked team in the NAIA.

The Mustangs won the game, 5-3, and had a 4-0 lead after four innings.

Steve Karkenny drove in two runs for The Master’s College.

Mustangs starter James Scott gave up only one run on two hits in four innings.

In other baseball news, Charlie Gillies, a pitcher at The Master’s College, earned the Golden State Athletic Conference player of the week honors.

Gillies, a senior right-hander from Castaic, nearly threw a perfect game against Westmont last week. He struck out 16 and didn’t give up a hit until the eighth inning, a two-out double. Gillies retired 27 of the 28 batters he faced.

John Gilbertson, a runner at The Master’s College, set the school record in the 1,500 at the Cal-Nevada Championships over the weekend.

He won the race in 3 minutes, 51 seconds and broke Anthony Pizzo’s record of 3 minutes, 54 seconds.

Pizzo was fourth in the 1,500 at the Cal-Nevada Championships.

The Master’s College finished 11th as a team at the meet.

It was not a good weekend for Bryan Herta Autosport at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama.

Alex Tagliani didn’t make it through the first lap of the Izod IndyCar Series race, losing power in the first turn and dropping out without completing a lap. He finished in 26th place.

Troy Castaneda crashed and finished in last place in the Firestone Indy Lights race at Barber Motorsports Park. At least he got in 32 laps before having to withdraw.

Next up for the Bryan Herta Autosport drivers is the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach April 14 and 15.

The Dodgers lost the first game of the annual Freeway Series against the Angels, 12-3, in Anaheim.

Mark Trumbo hit a three-run homer for the Angels. Juan Rivera was 2-for-3 with a double and drove in a run for the Dodgers.

The Dodgers and Angels play again tonight at Dodger Stadium.

The Kings shut out the visiting Edmonton Oilers, 2-0, at Staples Center. Goaltender Jonanthan Quick recorded his 10th shutout of the season, a franchise best.

The Kings have two games left in the regular season. They play the San Jose Sharks on Thursday.
