1873 - Vasquez gang raids Kingston in (now) Kings County; ties up townspeople, makes off with $2,500 in cash and jewels [story]
Kingston

Enter the home of the DeChellis family of Santa Clarita, Calif., and be prepared for the senses to be overwhelmed. Eight occupants crowd into their cramped suburban tract home, four of whom are under the age of three. The constant swirl of activity revolves around “Baby Land”, a combination dining/living/family room that has become the catch-all for the family’s frenetic existence.

The room “poses quite a design dilemma for our family,” wrote Tasha DeChellis in her contest entry for the Arrow Fastener $10,000 Dream Room Contest. “Our space … is a challenge to arrange … to accommodate bustling toddlers, storage, and an adult-friendly place to relax and host company at the end of the day. Please help us turn our home from havoc to haven.”

The DeChellis’ plea for a room makeover is about to be answered. Her entry was selected from more than 15,000 by a panel of judges to earn a dream-like transformation, led by noted designer and radio host Leslie Segrete. A combination of factors, including the news that the DeChellis family recently opened their home to a family of three who had fallen on hard times, led the judges to designate the DeChellis entry the clear favorite.

Segrete, co-host of the popular DIY show “The Money Pit,” was one of the judges moved by DeChellis’ entry, accompanied by a photo of a scattered, cluttered and toy-dominated area. Segrete will travel this week to the DeChellis home, outside of Los Angeles, to use her design skills, along with Arrow’s building know-how, to create functional and aesthetically pleasing space that will please adults and kids alike.

“I can’t wait to help the DeChellis family solve their design dilemma, and restore some order to their household,” Segrete said. “As a mom of a toddler myself, I can appreciate the challenges that Tasha and her family face, compounded, of course, by the need to offer shelter to some close friends. I know we can help her overcome the challenge, and I can’t wait to get started!”

Arrow’s DIY-friendly lines of fastening products make it easy for people to kick off their own transformative experience. Arrow’s market-leading fastener products such as staple guns, hammer tackers, glue guns and rivet tools make DIY improvements accessible to anybody.

Segrete and Arrow recently took their joint messages of DIY empowerment to the masses during a 13-week series featured on Segrete’s program, “The Money Pit.” Listeners in 250 radio markets and online at www.MoneyPit.com were led by Segrete and co-host Tom Kraeutler through easy-to-manage home improvement projects that can be tackled immediately. The library of segments can be heard on Arrow Fastener’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ArrowFastener , or via the radio show’s website at www.moneypit.com.
