Joseph Stoddard will demonstrate at the Sept 21 meeting of the Santa Clarita Artists Association. This event is free, open to the public and meets at 6:30 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, 23630 Valencia Blvd.
“My demonstration will be watercolor painting of an urban scene, using pencil, ink and watercolor. I will discuss the importance of sketching, composition, value and keeping the painting loose and expressive.”
Stoddard is a partner at SKA Design (an environmental graphics design office) located in South Pasadena. He paints in the evenings and on weekends.
“Never let reality stand in the way of a good painting,” said Stoddard. “This has been my goal for the past twenty years as I have struggled with the challenging medium of watercolor. I want people to get an emotional response from my paintings and sketches and to be charmed and surprised by my interpretation.”
He painted for many Pasadena events: the Bungalow Heaven Annual Tour, the Colorado Street Bridge Party, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design, the California Art Club Artists for Architecture Painting Project, the Pasadena Symphony and the Pasadena Pops Orchestra. His work was recently featured in the The Art of Watercolor, a French art magazine, Studios magazine, Watercolor Artist magazine, Westways Magazine, Artist’s Sketchbook Magazine, American Artist Watercolor Magazine and American Artist Watercolor Highlights. His studio was featured in The Man Cave Book.
Stoddard authored three books: Expressive Color (2008), Redlands Sketchbook (2007) and Pasadena Sketchbook (recently reprinted in a second edition). His books contain paintings of architecture, landmarks and points of interest in Pasadena and Redlands. He taught design at Art Center College of Design and is a demonstration artist throughout the country.
Also, Azusa Pacific University purchased a series of 10 original sketchbooks for their permanent collection (2012), and a print of his painting was given to Laura Bush by Maranatha High School. He submitted art for the Bright Side of the City art event in Jyvaskyla, Finland (2013). His painting of the Pasadena Train Station is in the permanent collection of the Pasadena Museum of History. He developed the theme paintings for the Pasadena Showcase House of Design (2012 and 2014). You can see his work on his web site: josephstoddard.com.
